Who are the Homophobic Legislators? The Citizens Will Lock You In!
– "Rainbow Siege,October 5th"
In order to urge Taiwan's Legislative Yuan to quickly review and approve the Marriage Equality Bill that has already been in the Judiciary and Organic Laws and Statutes Committee for almost one year, the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR) and 99 other NGOs have founded the "Marriage Equality Revolutionary Front" to host a press conference on the morning of September 9th at the main entrance of the Legislative Yuan.
At this conference they announced that on October 5th they would hold a protest outside of the Legislative Yuan and carry out a "Rainbow Siege" to show the diverse sources of support for the Marriage Equality Bill and to encourage the Legislative Yuan to say "I do" to the bill. Representatives of more than forty supporting organizations attended the conference along with many voters from the second voting district of Taoyuan who denounced their representative Liao Zhengjing (last term's agenda-leading legislative committee member) for not moving forward this important human rights bill in the committee agenda. They say: "Legislator Liao himself is homophobic, but he uses the excuse that people from his own district asked him not to move the bill forward."
The host of the press conference, attorney at law Victoria Hsu (CEO f TAPCPR, herself also a voter of the Taoyuan second voting district), expressed that this amendment that guarantees the eqaul rights of LGBT families is a government responsibility. She stated: "Taiwan has already ratified and carried out the United Nations' ICCPR, ICESCR and CEDAW. In both the National Report Review of 2013 ( ICCPR, ICESCR )and 2014 (CEDAW), the international human rights committee unanimously suggested that Taiwan's government should change current civil code in order to ensure rights for same-sex partners and eliminate discrimination."
Zhang Mingxu (of the National Taiwan University Queer Alliance and Gay and Lesbian Awakening Day) stated that voting trends now are drastically different from how they were in the past. He says that new voters overwhelmingly support marriage equality and that if political parties continue to inaccurately measure public opinion on
these issues, they will pay a heavy price in future elections.
In addition, the gay organization Bear Class's representative Xi-en spoke out against homophobic religious groups who oppose the bill. He said: "This frightening and painful reality will only make us feel braver as we are further oppressed."
The TAPCPR Secretary General, Chien Chih-Chieh explained the design of the "Homophobes locked in, marriage equality is the key" action. The Marriage Equality Revolutionary Front has already made 112 padlocks so that voters can purchase online a padlock to "lock up" their district representative and sponsor the Front. The
homophobic legislators will be « locked in » until they agree to support marriage equality, give liberty to love, and "unlock themselves." After this, Taoyuan district voters took part in the "locking up" ceremony for legislator Liao Zhengjing in hopes that on October fifth he might give up his prejudices and support marriage equality by coming to the ceremony to "unlock himself."
Finally, the groups participating in the press conference all tied on head pink banners with words "Marriage Equality" and held red signs saying "Homophobia is Unconstitutional" while marching around the Legislative Yuan. They announce their plan to defend the Marriage Equality Bill on October 5th.
