Who are the Homophobic Legislators? The Citizens Will Lock You In!
"Rainbow Siege, October 5th"
In 2013, the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR) submitted the "Marriage Equality Amendment," to the Legislative Yuan after three years of research and planning. DPP Legislator Cheng Li-chiun(鄭麗君) helped to push the draft forward, which successfully passed the first reading and was passed on to the Judiciary and Organic Laws and Statutes Committee. However, despite the people's attempts at communicating and expressing their pleas to legislators, the chairperson of the Committee, Liao Zhengjing(廖正井) wholly refused to move the bill forward. In response to citizens' questioning, Legislator Liao's office stated: "If the bill does not move forward, what responsibility do we have?" The questioners were flabbergasted.
The bill has been set aside in the Judiciary Committee for ten months. If it continues this way, then it is highly likely that in three terms (after 1.5 years), all of the hard work done thus far on the marriage equality amendment will be washed down the drain. We will be forced back to square one, and need to raise a new amendment all over again. As such, the TAPCPR has called together 99 civil groups to form the Marriage Equality Revolutionary Front (more groups are joining). We invite citizens who support marriage equality to join us on October fifth (Sunday) to surround the Legislative Yuan while the Legislature is reopening meeting and new chairs of the Committee are chosen. .
The Marriage Equality Revolutionary Front will host a press conference on September 9th to explain the design of the "Homophobes locked in, marriage equality is the key" action. We will also inform citizens how to participate in this "Lock in" action. At the press conference on September 9th, citizens will bring a symbolic padlock to hang in front of the Parliament, and there are more than 40 groups to represent citizens at the event. We will march around the Legislative Yuan to the chant "Homophobia is unconstitutional," then announce our plans for the Rainbow Siege on October 5th.
We invite you to join us for interviews on September 9th.
